  • Create a “Cheerios” Moment!

As you build your life, as you care for your children and as you guide them to become who you want them to be, ask yourself,  “Am I taking time to build the “Cheerios” moments?” Now those of you that know me, know there are no cheerios in our household, but I do like the term and I do make great effort to build these kind of moments with my girls and my loved ones as a whole.

Herson and I know the pressure of wanting to create financial stability for our children and our family. Wanting to take a vacation and put our kids into special programs such as horse back riding, dance and sports. We also know when you are building your future, the extra money (or time) is not always there to provide these experiences. Maybe you can’t buy your kid the favorite game they want or go on a cruise. We’ve been there, and are still there at many times.

This used to cause great pressure on me to want to make more, do more, so I could give my kids everything they deserve. Then one day it hit me! I was  working so hard to make the money, to make the dreams I thought they wanted, but I was not taking time to create the “Cheerios” moments. When you feel pressured to get ahead, to get a promotion, extra education or the bonus, you can change your personality. You can start to overwork, become crabby or short with your kids. All the while not realizing that your kids have all the wealth they need, YOU!

Herson and I, both came from financially and educationally challenged backgrounds. Our parents did not have a lot of money, nor did they know how to help get us in to the best college, on the best sports teams or in the extra curricular activities. What they did know is how to make the “Cheerios” moments! They knew how to work hard, love unconditionally, share gratitude, give to others, be patient, kind and loving! They wanted to give more money, more vacations, more activities, but money was not how they were able to show love and we did not suffer from the lack of extras in our life.

Growing up with less, can make you want to work your butt off to GET MORE so you can either GIVE MORE of HAVE MORE!

It can keep you so busy that you may forget the truly important moments are the “Cheerios” moments.

At this point, you may be asking, “What the heck is a Cheerios moment?”

    I am glad you asked!

There used to be a wonderful video I could share, expressing the innocence of two young children, Zach and Kate, who lost their mom to cancer. The video has since been removed due to ownership rights, but this was one of the most touching moments ever aired on the Oprah Winfrey show!

    cheerios moments

Because Zach & Kate’s mom, Kathleen, had known she was dying, the family had decided to spend time taking trips and connecting as a family while she was still alive. Oprah asked Kate what her favorite moment from that year had been.

“One day when I came back from swimming,” she said, “my mom was in bed. Mom said, ‘Kate, would you get me a bowl of cereal?’ I said, ‘Sure.’ A week before she died, I was in my parents’ room.

I said, ‘Mom, would you wake me up if you go downstairs to get a bowl of cereal?’ So at 2 in the morning, we had a bowl of Cheerios together.” What Oprah and we as viewers found so powerful about Kate’s story: They’d been everywhere from Palm Springs to Disney World, but what Kate remembered was a simple, intimate moment of connection. The producers and Oprah called this the Cheerios moment from that point forward.

If you have achieved financial success, know that although your family may appreciate the extras, it’s the “Cheerios” moments that will last in their hearts forever, not the money.  If you are struggling to create financial success or you never care to have more than you currently have, that is ok too. Many of us have been there. You still have all the wealth you need to give your children the ability to have a FULFILLING life! You can give them the confidence, self esteem, love and security needed to teach them how to sustain themselves!  Take time away from the computer, the TV, the bills, the bank account or the shopping spree and ensure there is some special quality time with you and your loved ones.

During our tightest times with money or time itself, we’ve done simple things like surprise our kids with a camp out in their room, watch planes take off at the airport on the top level of the parking garage at night or set up a make believe spa day at home with cucumbers on their eyes, a clay mask and towels on their head. Our children rarely felt the effects of financial strain. We attempted to make them feel safe, secure and rich versus worried, stressed and scared. Build a fort with your child, create a picnic or walk in nature. If you have no kids, do this with your friends and family. Be spontaneous, simple, spoil them, love them, praise them for what is right! Try not to let the pressures of everyday life or their less than perfect behavior hold you back from giving authentic love and words of kindness. No matter how much money or time you have, take a few special moments to create something that money can not buy.

In the end, the “Cheerios” moments are the only investments that can truly offer a lasting return!

  • A New Formula for Fat Loss! Eat MORE Do LESS!

Yes, YOU READ THAT CORRECTLY! Eat more and do less to achieve the fat loss you have been dreaming of!

There has been an epidemic over the past 30 years of individuals working their butts off and starving themselves to lose weight and be “healthy”. This epidemic has led to a country full of overweight families, chronic pain, joint deterioration and mental illness. In the United States, we rank 28th in life expectancy, yet we probably rank the highest in fitness clubs, diet plans and weight loss clinics.  If weight loss, exercise and diet foods are so great, why do we have so many fatigued, depressed individuals seeking medication for ailments such as fibromyalgia, rheumatoid arthritis and chronic fatigue syndrome?

    Fatigue

There are many reasons why we are to this point in which we rank so poorly in health, yet spend the most on health care. One very LARGE factor is our dependency on using the SCALE and WEIGHT LOSS as our measurement of health. We have not transformed enough as a society to start measuring body composition and lifestyle habits as a more accurate gauge as to whether our wellness plan is successful or not. The formula of do more and eat less in order to achieve the winning lotto number on the scale- is one of the very reasons a large majority of our population is completely breaking down. We are making what we assume are healthy choices just to see a number change. Very rarely are we paying attention to how we feel, how we look, how are clothes fit….we are looking at an inanimate object on the floor to determine whether we are successful or not.

    Scale help

Looking at just WEIGHT LOSS– is an absolute waste of time and setting the majority up for a continual, never ending ride on the merry- go-round.  I know this may sound absolutely CRAZY to many of you, but let me share some insight on some not so logical thoughts that have been planted into our heads over the past several years of our health and weight loss promotion.

    merry-go-round

Illogical Thought #1: “When you lose weight, you can get off your blood pressure medication?” How many have heard this statement? It is ridiculous for us to be taught as health professionals that an individual can be taken off of their medications due to the simple fact of losing weight. It is also ridiculous for any of us to still be making that statement. Sometimes when we hear a message, it sounds good, so we just start to repeat it and believe it without stopping to break it down logically. If blood pressure imbalances and health imbalances were solely related to a number on the scale, so many people who weigh 120-160lbs would not be having heart attacks, irregular heart beats, high cholesterol or chronic pain. Weight loss does not guarantee any health rewards at the end. The next time you are told you will get off medications when you lose weight, ask your professional how many thin people they have taking required prescription medications right now? Thin people can be just as unhealthy, if not more than someone who is just starting their health and weight loss journey. It is the way in which someone loses weight and the way in which someone lives their overall life that will determine much of their health and whether they will be dependent on medications, not the number on the scale.

Illogical Thought #2: You can lose 30lbs in Two Months! Who gives a shit if you can lose 30lbs in two months? Honestly, what do you really think you will look and feel like losing 30lbs in two months? Anything over 2lbs of weight loss per week generally results in a loss of almost 50% of lean muscle and bone. So YAY! You are 30lbs lighter on the scale and now you have joint pain, cartilage loss and weakness due to losing 15 pounds of healthy ligament tissue, bone density and muscle tone. This mind set of weight loss sets up a continual cycle of deprivation and torture. Every time  someone experiences rapid weight loss, they lose a little more healthy tissue and then when they find this ridiculous amount of unhealthy weight loss is almost impossible to sustain, they rapidly gain all of their weight back and more. The sad part is, rarely are they gaining back any of  the healthy 15lbs of tissue they lost, it tends to be 40lbs of pure fat, making the next round of weight loss even more torturous than before.

Illogical Thought #3: I will be happy when I lose weight! If this were the case, why have so many thin, beautiful people been suicidal, depressed, cheated on or addicted to drugs. Hale Barry, Heather Locklear, Lyndsey Lohan, Jennifer Aniston, Owen Wilson, Michael Jackson, Greg Louganis- each are amazing, achieved, beautiful people who have suffered many trial & tribulations in their life and being thin did not give them any free rides to happiness. Yes, you may be happier when you lose weight, but yes it will depend on how you lose the weight and how much you love yourself now! We are being promoted to drink a couple shakes per day, overexercise and/or maybe get weight loss surgery so we can be THIN! The human body needs whole food for optimal survival. It has to have fuel to create a tight, fit, stable body. Losing weight, just to get weight off- does not mean you will achieve the body or mind you are looking for. Rapid weight loss or weight loss through food deprivation- typically leads to thin, aging, sagging skin and chronic nutritional deficiencies. I assure you, this is NOT fun, nor does it equate to lasting happiness.

Illogical Thought #4: Count Your Carbs, Sugar, Fiber, Fat & Proteins! No- please no- quit reading the crap nutritional facts on the label. These are all numbers designed to keep your brain busy and your butt getting bigger. I used to live my life doing this. I didn’t care what poison was listed below the number box, I just wanted the numbers to match my goal. I could eat less fat or less sugar and hit my magic scale number – so then I could end up with depression, mood swings, irritable bowel syndrome and infertility. If you lose weight eating sugar free jello poison, chemically ladened bars and dehydrated powder in a can- you are guaranteed to start increasing your negative health symptoms. The body was designed to live off of whole foods. Save your brain power and health. Quit counting the numbers and start eating as many ONE ingredient foods as possible. When you eat food from the Earth you do not need to be a mathematician in fiber, carbs, fat grams or anything else. The body wants this fuel and can achieve optimal health with high quality foods! I assure you, none of your great grandparents had to count so many numbers just to figure out how to sustain longevity or a healthy weight.

Illogical Thought #5: Overworked, Fatigued, maybe have some Heart Problems & Osteoporosis- Do More Cardio! This is the last, yet one of the most insane thoughts I will address in this blog. I don’t know how I fell for this myself. I absolutely hated cardio when I was younger and decided to just start off weight training. I achieved an absolutely, phenomenally fit body lifting weights, but felt gosh….I really should do more cardio. They say it’s good for me. I better start learning how to run. After forcing myself to start running a little at a time, taking cardio class, using the elliptical, I became pretty darn good at it. I ran 5 half marathons, several 5 and 10k’s and performed 45 minutes on the elliptical for fun now and then. Slowly over the years, my body started to weaken. My muscle mass started to decline. I would feel heavier after the half marathon. I was feeling more fatigued. Then I started meeting with clients who had done lots of cardio for years- many were slightly overweight or underweight, having heart problems, bone loss or chronic joint deterioration. After assessing our ancestors, studying how nature worked and the biology of the human cell, I thought,  “What are we absolutely insane?” No one in history added more stress to their body running to nowhere. No one tried to do more and eat less. Cardio does not build the body- it breaks down the body! It’s like saying- Yes, please drive your car an extra 10,000 miles each year, please give it less fuel, less oil changes and never park it in the garage. Keep it in idle in your driveway all night and see how fast you can absolutely destroy your vehicle. Your body is your vehicle in life! Although a moderate amount of cardio can be invigorating and healthy, daily cardio and/or cardio with too little fuel intake- will rarely lead to a hot, valuable body. Sadly, just as your vehicle, it can lead to more break downs, quicker depreciation in the value of your mind and the integrity of your healthy tissue. How and the heck did we end up with a better, more thought out maintenance plan for our cars than we did the human body?

With all this being said- You can still be asking, “But how do I eat more, do less and LOSE body fat?”

This blog is just the precursor to another exciting, yet simplified blog that is going to show you how and why you should be eating more food to achieve the body and health you want! How not to slow your metabolism or create a cycle of lose-gain-lose-gain.

As I am sure most of you have gathered at this point, the main gist of the story is- YOU NEED FUEL TO SURVIVE! You need food to make your metabolism work and the equation of Do More, Eat Less does not equal the kind of weight loss anyone is truly looking for in the end. Do More, Eat Less typically leads to an overstressed, overworked body being set up for thyroid dysfunction, joint injury and a brick wall with healthy fat loss.  Whole foods naturally tend to have 1/3rd the calories, chemicals and fat compared to the unhealthy fast foods and so called health products most of us are ingesting . They offer real natural sugars the body is used to, healthy, vitamin rich proteins and critical nutrients required to increase cellular metabolism. Instead of starting another “diet/death” plan- start thinking about changing the way you live as a whole. Realize you do not have to fear the food nature intended for us to thrive on. When you are eating real, whole foods- fill up your plate! If you fill your stomach with real food, you are less likely to binge or fall off track. Your body will be satiated and your way of life will be altered to just naturally live well! Bones, healthy lean muscle can be built and body fat can be incinerated if you have the quality nutrients, rest and exercise program your body desires.

Until we meet again….understand that if you are doing more and eating less, you may be running further and further away from your goal. If you are not sure how to stop the cycle, find a professional that understands this cycle of insanity and allow them to help guide you as to how you can eat more, do less and achieve the tight, fit body you are working towards.

  • My “Ah Ha” Moment with Metabolism!

For those who do not know my story, I will share with you briefly. At the age of 16, I started to become interested in how to lose weight and become aesthetically perfect. The lack of a quality male role model, mental head games from my boyfriend and an insecure, yet beautiful mother, can do this to you. My goal was to make my body as perfect as possible so my boyfriend would not want other women and would treat me with respect and love. It was also an aspect of control. When everything else seems out of control in your life, there’s this mental piece deep down inside of you that makes you realize you can eat what you want, when you want. You can exercise as much or as little as you want. You can be as thin or as heavy as you choose- it is your choice- your control.

I started my journey into health and fitness as an obsession to beat my personal best. Instead of fashion magazines and Seventeen, I read every fitness magazine and publication printed by man. I read diet books, took courses and started to obtain fitness certifications for my own working knowledge. Everything I read- led me to focus on less calories, less fat and more activity. I became obsessed with fat grams and daily exercise, but what was wrong with this? According to public health recommendations, it was good and still is good to eat less, move more and watch your overall fat intake. When people would make comments that I was getting too thin, I would brush it off that they were just jealous or they were not used to seeing a fit body so they did not know what too thin was. My mom would tell me she could feel my bones when she would rub my back, but she didn’t realize how obsessed my mind had become or how “RIGHT” I felt about the goals I was hitting. This carried on for about 5 years.

I was taught many lessons about metabolism during this 5 year period, which later turned into the best education I could ever receive. This “perfect” way of life I had studied  and was living, was actually slowly killing my body and robbing my well-being.

This regimen of 5-6 days of exercise, 1200-1500 calories and 20-25 fat grams daily, was slowly robbing my cells of their energy and creating stress overload. The visits to the doctor started at about the age of 18 and did not stop until I was led in a direction that pulled me away from my false “health” information. By the time I was 21, I had been put through two colonoscopies searching for answers to my chronic stomach pain and constipation, several visits for stress, skin rashes, skin discoloration, lack of menstruation and I should have been seeing a mental health doctor for my severe bouts of depression and mood swings (looking back- I am glad I never went that route, because I would have been placed on meds that do not address the underlying cause).  Who would have thought that at the age of 21, drinking water, eating “healthy” and daily exercise, would have led to such torture? Sickness did not run in my family. My great grandparents lived until their 80’s-90’s, my grandmother is still alive now at 89 and my mother and father are alive in their 60’s.

This is why I refused to believe in my 20’s that I was going to have to live with Irritable Bowel Syndrome, infertility and symptoms of stress overload. I kept searching for the answers. My initial search led me to learn I needed to eat more fat and have higher than 12% body fat in order to make a baby and have proper digestion. So I started making small changes. I started allowing myself to slow down a little, skip a workout and have a whole egg. These changes helped me end my chronic stomach pain and helped my menstruation return to normal.  I was still fearful of letting go and had not found all the answers. I continued thinking I was “right” to keep my calories at 1500 or below, to avoid red meat and real fat such as butter, olive oil and coconut oil. I was scared that if I ate these things, I would gain 50lbs and die of heart disease. I also felt maybe I should do more cardio such as run half marathons for fun and do the 3 Day Walk for Breast Cancer to help save lives. On top of this, I decided it was time to open my own business to help motivate others to live “healthy’. Teaching them they could run less and still run races, they could eat more fat and still lose weight, I felt I was on the right track. Overall I was. I was learning daily lessons through my life, my clients and my studies. The unfortunate part is, my formal education was misleading me. It was still failing to create optimal health and a phenomenal body.

My small changes corrected some areas, but my additional work load, my avoidance of specific foods and my added cardio, kept creating more and more fatigue. My resting heart rate was at 44 beats per minute (which I used to celebrate because of false education). I started experiencing sporadic numbness in my arms, a dull chest ache, cyclical flu-like symptoms, low white blood cell count, swollen lymph nodes and extreme muscle fatigue after exercise. I went to my doctor seeking help again. Of course she sent me to a cardiologist, a hematologist and an ENT. I had previously met with an oncologist for biopsies on abnormal breast tissue and visited the ER twice on the doctor’s recommendation to get my heart checked. My primary let me know my blood work showed I was continually fighting off the Epstein-Barr Virus, which the clinical diagnosis was Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. She let me know that some doctors feel it is a crock and others find it very valid, but either way, she had no solution to help me fix it or fight it, other than some meds she said really didn’t offer much support. My ENT said I had nothing pathological in my throat other than a nodule from having to use my voice so much to teach. He also pretty much laughed at me when I told him I wanted to make sure I did not have lymphoma because of my continued fatigue, swollen nodes and low white blood cell count. Epstein-Barr is shown to be directly related to lymphoma according to the published studies, but he thought I was pretty much an idiot to be asking this question. He offered to run a cat scan for the swollen glands in my neck, but made me feel so ignorant for asking that I skipped his cat scan and I avoided paying his $300 bill. No longer will I pay for SHIT service (to be bluntly honest)! I work my butt off to make $50 and he is going to get paid $300 for a 10 minute visit to make me feel stupid for ensuring I do not have something more serious. My visit to the cardiologist led me to wearing a halter monitor while I ate, drank and slept. The monitor came back with the results that my heart was stopping in the middle of the night for up to 5-10 seconds and my resting heart rate would go well into the low 30’s at rest. He then ran a stress test with ultrasound and found I had a leaky heart valve and mitral valve prolapse at the age of 33. With this being said, I got a list of symptoms, but again no solutions as to what do I do other than keep an eye on it. The hematologist said all the blood work looked fine and he had no answers for the swollen nodes, dizziness etc. I asked for a copy of the blood work and noticed my CO2 was low. Of course I went home to start researching and found the symptoms of low CO2 (otherwise known as Respiratory Alkalosis)  to be some of the main symptoms I was experiencing. Why did he say my blood work was fine and why did he not address this if the symptoms matched what I was stating? This is why YOU ALWAYS ask for a copy of your records. You may not be a doctor, but you may be the only person who cares enough about YOU or has the time to be a detective and advocate for your own life.

It feels pretty much defeating when you have been doing what the media, textbooks and doctors tell you to do, but your health is failing more than those who are not even paying attention. So who is right? What is the best way to live? I started studying science. The biology of the human cell and studies that are about creating and sustaining life, versus just weight loss and fitness routines.

I found that much of the garbage we are being fed, is just that – GARBAGE. From the food, to the dieting advice, from exercise recommendations and medications- much is absolute GARBAGE setting us all up for failure.

While researching something for one of my clients, I came across my AH-HA moment!

Let me share with you some of the most important scientific definitions you could ever absorb, learn and apply.

Metabolism: The chemical processes occurring within a living cell or organism that are necessary for the maintenance of life. In metabolism some substances are broken down to yield energy for vital processes while other substances, necessary for life, are synthesized.

Nutrient: is a chemical that an organism needs to live and grow or a substance used in an organism’s metabolism which must be taken in from its environment. They are used to build and repair tissues, regulate body processes and are converted to and used as energy. Methods for nutrient intake vary, with animals and protists consuming foods that are digested by an internal digestive system, but most plants ingest nutrients directly from the soil through their roots or from the atmosphere. Organic nutrients include carbohydrates, fats, proteins (or their building blocks, amino acids), and vitamins.

Calories: Are in brief- Units of Energy.  Energy that animals (including human beings) derive from their food, through the process of cellular respiration, the process of joining oxygen with the molecules of food (aerobic respiration) or of reorganizing the atoms within the molecules for anaerobic respiration. Animals need a minimum intake of food energy in order to sustain their metabolism and drive their muscles. For humans, food energy typically comes from joining oxygen with carbohydrates, fats, proteins, organic acids, polyols, and ethanol present in the diet. Some diet components that provide little or no food energy, such as water, minerals, vitamins and fiber, may still be necessary to health and survival for other reasons.

Vitamin: is an organic compound required by an organism as a vital nutrient in limited amounts. The value of eating a certain food to maintain health was recognized long before vitamins were identified. Vitamins are classified as either water-soluble or fat-soluble. In humans there are 13 vitamins: 4 fat-soluble (A, D, E, and K) and 9 water-soluble (8 B vitamins and vitamin C). Water-soluble vitamins dissolve easily in water and, in general, are readily excreted from the body, to the degree that urinary output is a strong predictor of vitamin consumption.[15] Because they are not as readily stored, more consistent intake is important. Fat-soluble vitamins are absorbed through the intestinal tract with the help of lipids (fats).

Enzyme: A protein (or protein-based molecule) that speeds up a chemical reaction in a living organism. An enzyme acts as catalyst for specific chemical reactions, converting a specific set of reactants (called substrates) into specific products. Without enzymes, life as we know it would not exist.

Did you have your AH-Ha moment yet? Or are you saying, “What the heck does all of this mean?”

To say it simply- it means everything we have been taught about not eating, moving more, eating low fat, cutting out carbs, cutting out animal protein etc.- is as a whole…. ABSOLUTE GARBAGE  if you’re goal is to achieve a healthy, fit mind, body and spirit.

Metabolism, does not mean you are fat or skinny, it means you either have rapid occurring, healthy chemical reactions which maintain life, or you lack efficient nutrients, vitality and vitamins to create and maintain natural processes. If you really cut out all the brainwashing and look at these terms scientifically and logically, you will find the formula to do more, eat less and eat processed man-made foods to sustain health is again absolute GARBAGE if you want lasting success and quality of life!

Now to end this rather long blog (that was meant to be brief, simple and inspiring, yet became a little more deep and hopefully still inspiring), here’s how the story ends and my journey continues. Once I discovered how the body really works and how cells strive to maintain life through the nutrients we consume and how we treat our bodies, I learned how to conquer my most daunting health symptoms.

I can pretty much say I have now eliminated ALL of the health symptoms I was seeking help for or have learned how to stop their negative progression. I maintain 16-18% body fat and an ideal weight with doing half of what I used to and eating real, whole foods that were designed to create LIFE! It took a lot of education, personal self growth, strength and a willingness to make a change. Learning how to balance external and internal stressors, address dietary deficiencies and improper training programs, has helped me and now thousands of others succeed in conquering chronic health problems, pain and unwanted body fat! When one realizes humans were not designed to be suffering this much, especially those with access to clean water and food, one too can have their AH-HA moment. This is the moment in which suffering ends and solutions begin.

  • The Three C’s to Better Health and a Trim Waistline

Are you trying to improve your health?C

Do you want to lose inches off your waist line or sculpt your hips?

If so, I have the solution for you and it does not include counting calories or cholesterol as a matter of importance!

As a society we are getting so caught up in the numbers that we are forgetting the true steps to success. This obsession with the scale, blood tests, medications, calories, carbs, sugar and fat has us currently ranked as dead last in health out of 17 developing countries. But WAIT, we did score NUMBER ONE in one category- OBESITY! We have been tracking our numbers, taking medications and weighing in for the last fifty years or more, so if this method actually worked, WHY ARE WE NOT THE HEALTHIEST IN THE WORLD? You guessed it! Because it DOESN’T WORK! We have been so focused on where we want to be and the physical aspects of health, that we are forgetting how everything works together as a whole. How numbers are not always accurate and how to motivate ourselves to treat our body as a temple. We have forgotten or never found the three underlying C’s to true health, happiness and HOTNESS!

    The 1st C- Communication

The first key to a healthy mind and body is communication. Many people do not understand how lack of open, honest communication impacts their health. For instance, if you hire a health coach, but you are unwilling to tell them how you feel about yourself or the pain you deal with from previous life experiences, you make it harder for your health coach to help you work in a healthy direction. You can lose valuable time not addressing the critical pieces to your wellness. If you are upset with something your spouse or your co-worker did and you do not let them know, the thoughts you hold inside can cause you to eat too much, pick poor food choices, not eat or just make you sick inside. So although it was your choice to eat too much or skip meals that hindered your goals, the true underlying cause was the lack of communication. It is okay to communicate if you are struggling, feeling depressed or have something to share you are not proud of. The goal is to find someone you trust and talk with them. Let it out and ensure people know the true you and how you are feeling. Holding back what you really feel whether it be from embarrassment, fear, anger or anticipation of someone else s response, will almost always hinder your results and increase your health problems.

    The 2nd C- Compassion

The second piece is compassion. First and foremost, compassion for yourself. Many people are willing to cut someone else a break, but rarely do we let ourselves off the hook. We tend to beat ourselves up for mistakes at work, at home or in our fitness plan. Communicating with yourself using compassion will help you excel in all areas. If you are on a venture to heal your body or lose weight, it will be a heck of a lot easier if you do not beat yourself up when you make mistakes or your life gets thrown for a loop. It is inevitable that you will not lose weight every week, you will not eat perfect everyday and you will not always be the top performer. It’s okay. You are HUMAN! When trying to motivate anyone to another level or support them to their goals, we provide positive love, praise and empathy. Give this to yourself and you will see a greater success than ever before and know that success is always achieved with a few steps forward and a couple steps back. In reality you are ahead of where you were.  It is also important to have compassion for others. Sometimes there is someone at work or school who is being rude to us or our spouse is not so thoughtful. Most of us are very quick to take this rudeness personal. When we take how others treat us personal, we throw ourselves off track again making poor choices. We may overeat, under eat, stress eat, skip exercise or over exercise because we feel like we were treated poorly because we are not good enough or not “liked”  It is important to have compassion and empathy for the other people around us. Maybe they are not being rude to us because we are not good enough, maybe they are not having a good day or maybe they feel bad themselves and are not communicating how they feel. Have compassion for them and understand they may not be thinking like you or may have a lot on their plate. It’s important to express how you feel and to communicate with others, putting yourself in their shoes and your own. Communicating with compassion and having compassion for yourself reduces stress and can help you make optimal choices for your health.

The 3rd and most important C- Consistency

Aristotle once said, “You will become what you consistently do.” This is TRUTH! As a whole, us Americans are failing at achieving health because we tend to be an all or nothing society. If we don’t get what we want when we want it, we tend to give up or change the course. It is important to practice the daily habits required to achieve your overall goals. It is just not possible to achieve a healthy, happy, hot body without consistency. Whatever gets you sick, keeps you sick and whatever gets you well, keeps you well. If you remain consistent eating well, exercising, communicating and sharing love- you will learn a great deal about your body. You will see what works for you and you will not self sabotage. You will feel at peace when you make mistakes and understand others make them too. Staying the course and consistently learning how to treat yourself better, will lead to the greatest physical, mental and spiritual health you have ever experienced. Consistency is required to be successful in ALL areas of life. You can not come to work two weeks and be off four and expect success. You can not be nice to your spouse one year and then rude the next year and expect a great relationship. It works the same when getting well. It’s the consistency of practicing healthy behaviors, not just for a few weeks or a couple years. It’s a lifetime of working to become a better you. This is how lasting results are achieved.

If you feel you have been struggling to get healthy, lose weight or meet a goal- stop a minute and assess the three C’s. Are you communicating effectively, honestly and with compassion? Or are you holding back? Are you having compassion for yourself? Are you judging others or are you having compassion for where they may be at on their journey? Are you willing to consistently eat well, think well, live well as a whole, allowing for minor stalls and setbacks? Or are you only making temporary changes hoping for immediate results? Committing to apply the 3 C’s in all areas of your life will lead to less stress, better choices and lasting results! Without them, you may never reach your fullest potential.

  • What Does it Mean to Be the Change?

What does this quote mean to you? For me it was a life changing quote triggering a change in the way I live my daily life. I realized that many times I was frustrated by the way something was or the way someone acted, but after reading this quote, I realized if I wanted things to improve, I had to be the change. I could either complain about the situation or I could start doing something to make a difference. Sometimes we do not feel like we have the control to make a difference, but truly we do.

For example, many of you know I get very frustrated that some companies make money off of us selling low quality food loaded with chemicals. It’s upsetting that the individuals operating these companies are making big cash creating sickness. Why should parents have to be a scientist to know how to shop healthy for their kids? Why can’t you trust that your spaghetti sauce isn’t loaded with high fructose corn syrup and your chicken soup isn’t spiced with MSG? It’s ridiculous. At first it seemed as if the food system was so far gone that I’d might as well hang it up and drink the chemical cocktail, but then I realized if I chose to do nothing, things would remain the same. I would just be venting, our health would still be failing and people would be making my money selling crap food. It’s at that moment I decided to be the change. I decided to slowly work towards switching our snacks to whole food organic options, started buying foods from local farmers and discovering how I could conveniently cook foods without buying chemically laden seasoning packets. Within two years our family’s grocery cart changed from 85% packaged to maybe 15% or less. From there I chose to share with others. If I could do it, you could do it. Or if I can make it for you, I will. These small steps helped my family, my clients and our community. In addition, now the people who are selling ethical, healthy food are making an honest living off of my money, not those robbing my health for temporary riches.

I also work hard to be the change I want to see in the world by being as open and honest as possible. We all have dysfunction, strengths, weaknesses and insecurities. Many of us suffer because we are not willing to share what we  are going through or to reach out to others who may have advice  to support us. I do my best to share my opportunities, accept my mistakes and seek advice from others. I feel this helps me grow personally and helps me prevent making more critical mistakes. It also allows other people to know they can feel comfortable opening up about areas they may need support in. We are all human. We are each going through this thing called “life”. There’s just no way you can live without ever having a fear, doubt, insecurity, embarrassment or relationship issue. It’s practically impossible. I grew up thinking I had to hold all of these things in and to just try to do it on my own or figure it all out. Humans weren’t designed to do it alone. We were blessed with the ability to communicate, have compassion and to lift each other up. If you’re not already comfortable in sharing your doubts, concerns etc. with others, find someone you feel you can learn from, someone who can help you through the situation. Don’t do it alone. There’s no need to.  If you want others to be open and honest with you, ensure you are leading by example and being the change you wish to see.

I could express a thousand more ways I try to apply this thought process to my daily life, but I’d love to hear from you. Each person has a profound impact on the world. Every action has a reaction and every choice you make has a ripple effect. It’s up to you as to how much of an impact you want to make and if you want it to be a positive or a negative impact. How do you lead by example or what do you do to make a situation better? What area in life frustrates you and how do you think you could Be the Change you wish to see?

  • Only Coffee Is Instant

As most of you know, much of the current population is failing when it comes to achieving an ideal weight and good health.

After 19 years of motivating myself and others to live well, I have learned there is one large factor as to why so many are not meeting or sustaining their goals.

When it comes to health and weight loss, as a majority we expect it to be instant, fast, easy to learn, quickly achievable with no obstacles, setbacks, just results! And if there are any setbacks, falters, delays etc. WE GIVE UP ! We give up for a day, a week, a year. This is where most of us are going wrong.

We have to remember…. only coffee is instant!

When I was 18, I learned soda had more calories than water and if I just substituted water for soda I could drop weight and feel better. Within one week of drinking water and less soda, I dropped 6lbs! I then learned alcohol caused my body to store approximately 30% more of my food as body fat. It’s at that point I decided I’d rather eat a chocolate cake than drink my calories. At least chocolate cake burned off, didn’t make me store more fat or trash my brain cells.  I took these pieces of knowledge and put them in my toolbox. I applied them to my daily life and then started to learn more.

Through my journey with health, I have made several mistakes, experienced setbacks, children, career changes, death, sickness etc. through all of this, I could not throw all of my knowledge out the window.  In the beginning, I started off highly obsessed, giving myself little room to falter. After a few years of obsessing over every calorie, annoying people with my obsessive eating behaviors and negative self talk, I realized this was no way to live. I also realized we were never designed to live perfect, but to live consistent, balanced and seeking wisdom. To live with the drive to improve our current self.

As with anything worth having in life, you have to work for it. You have to learn from mistakes, apply your knowledge and be flexible.

We have been brainwashed to think weight loss, pain relief and good health should just happen when we decide we’re ready to make a change.  We assume because we have been told to exercise more, eat less or eat mini meals throughout the day, that as soon as we start doing it, our body should respond. This is like registering for college and expecting to have a degree within four weeks. It just doesn’t work that way. The human body, just as your marriage, your education and your career, needs nurturing, flexibility and consistency. With time, education and application of your knowledge, YOU WILL SEE RESULTS!!! Just as someone slowly sees negative results with consistent dieting, poor eating habits and lack of movement, you will see slow, consistent results with continued application of better eating habits, exercise and a positive attitude. It’s the Law of Cause and Effect! It has to happen, but it does not have to happen instantly.

If you are educated properly, you commit to learning and commit to applying, you will have all the knowledge needed to sustain a healthy, fit body for the majority of your life. You can not give up! You have to invest the time, energy and  money to achieve a better you. You have to find solutions to your obstacles and you have to make yourself WORTH it! Are you not worth more than your career or your marriage? Without  you, the career and the marriage can not exist. Without the WHOLE, HEALTHY you, the marriage and the career will never be as successful as they could be!

If you are ready to receive your pain-free, lean, fit body, it’s time to start learning! It’s time to put in the time. You can not drop out a couple semesters or cheat on a few tests and truly expect results. Dedicate the same time you have to your career, your family, your relationships…. be flexible, apply your daily knowledge and learn from your mistakes. Don’t keep repeating them over and over again expecting a different result. If you are failing in a certain area, study harder and learn how to make it happen!!

You are worth it. Your body is worth the time!

Know that your body is made up of more than 100 trillion cells. These cells take time to transform. They require good, whole food, healthy balance and consistency to renew. It’s really not about the calories, the short-term commitment or the scale.  It’s truly about your willingness to value yourself and to apply what you learn daily.

Take time to brew the coffee. Take time to make the changes needed in your life.

    You are worth it!
